I don’t really like posting my poetry, cause I don’t think it’s very good lol. But I wrote this for an assignment last year and I have a couple more. They didn’t turn out that bad, and I thought I’d share. If you want to see more of them, let me know. This poem may not make that much sense since it was for an assignment, but the background is as follows, so you have a general idea. A young soldier going to Vietnam; almost dies. That’s pretty much it. Enjoy! ā¤
Walking down the valley,
Thinking of the homeland,
Wondering if Iāll make it back,
Me and my little bandā¦
Ā
We came over here only to see,
The true horrors they didnāt tell;
We were proud and stood there tall,
There we were by the Liberty Bell.
Ā
We felt the impulse to come over,
Some with courage, some with fear,
Our mothers, sweethearts and sisters,
We all were scared, we all shed tearsā¦
Ā
We were there wishing we were here,
Now weāre here wishing we were thereā¦
Ā
The trees loom dark, I am hearing things,
My body bold, my heart grows cold,
I shiver inside; is this my last day?
Ā
My brothers-in-arms, they stand there,
An outward skin of bravado and heroism we show,
Inside weāre all quakingā¦anticipating that awful momentā¦
Ā
It must be overā¦I am lying there,
I see myself, bloody, torn and shook,
My buddyās trying to revive me,
My will isnāt thereā¦I am leaving.
Ā
You have the choice, to go or stay
The light grows nearer, it continues,
Very shortly your spirit will leave your body,
Make your choice!
Ā
My mind races as pictures flash through,
Home, girlfriend, buddies, āNam, life.
The pain and grief were gone, but could I leave?
I could see my body growing coldā¦
Ā
I looked straight at the light and then at myself,
And then I knew an intense pain,
āMatt, heās alive, s***, the old boy made it through!ā
